CHANGES, OR CHANGED PERSPECTIVES?

Snow is not like it was fifty years ago
when it fell with excitement
and lay with expectation;
when there was anticipation
in every flake, mystery in every drift
and innocence to find with every sift.

Today it is only cold slush,
threatening everyone's walk,
inconvenient to step outside
where others have already cried;
too dangerous to tread
lest we miss what's overhead.

Today I stand, back to fire
and distantly consider pristine stillness
whose innocent white shape
others come to test or rape
until one day they stand and gaze
as I am gazing now.
